Description

Confined spaces are dangerous. Many workers are injured and killed each year while working in confined spaces. An estimated 60% of the fatalities are well-intentioned rescuers. A confined space is more hazardous than other workspaces for many reasons.

This 3-part course will educate you on confined spaces, the identification and control of hazards that can be encountered, and key steps to working safely.

  • Part 1: Hazard Awareness covers how to recognize confined spaces and the types of hazards that may be present
  • Part 2: Hazard Control covers how to control the hazards
  • Part 3: Working Safely covers proper ways to enter and work in a space as well as emergency planning

This course is equivalent to the general theory and information provided by a classroom course. However, it does not provide the hands-on, workplace-specific training that allows workers to put this information into practice in the workplace. Employers must ensure that this additional workplace-specific training is provided for confined space workers.

Although this course covers the basics of most legal requirements, there may be some variation between jurisdictions. It must be supplemented by further instruction and hands-on training that is specific to the jurisdiction, job, worksite, and equipment.

Topics include:

  • What a confined space is
  • The major hazards to be aware of
  • How to effectively control hazards
  • What to do before entering a space
  • What to do while working in a confined space
  • How to plan for emergencies
  • Responsibilities for ensuring safe work

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recall the responsibilities of workers, supervisors, and employers
  • Apply the definition of a confined space
  • Identify the types of hazards present in different scenarios
  • Recall why confined spaces are especially hazardous
  • Recognize when different hazard controls should be used
  • Recall the responsibilities of attendants and workers
  • Recall the rules for gas testing
  • Identify features of a confined space plan and a confined space permit
  • Recognize the steps needed to prepare for confined space entry
  • Recall key facts about confined space rescues

Average time to complete this course is approximately 3 hours.

Target Audience

  • Workers (including outside contractors) who enter and perform work in confined spaces in the workplace
  • Managers, supervisors, health and safety committee members or representatives

Individuals with control or authority over confined spaces or work being performed in confined spaces would also benefit from the course. This course outlines your legal duties and responsibilities and provides additional focus on details such as establishing and managing a confined space program.
